Couloir
LUMINOUS VOICES LAUDATE SINGERS with COULOIR ? Heidi Krutzen, harp and Ariel Barnes, cello
Saturday December 10, 2011 ? 8:00 pm St. Andrew?s United Church 10th & St. Georges, North Vancouver
The 2011 edition of Laudate Singers? winter concert by candlelight will feature this versatile choir with the virtuosic harp and cello duo Couloir. The program includes Christmas classics and colourfully varied special commissions.
The newly-formed Couloir consists of harpist Heidi Krutzen and cellist Ariel Barnes, neither of them strangers to Laudate or Vancouver audiences (www.couloir.ca). Having collaborated for many years as chamber and orchestral musicians, Ariel and Heidi have joined forces to explore the sound, timbre, and colour of cello and harp, a combination of instruments rarely heard together. Audiences will hear Couloir playing Three Meditations on Light, written for them by Jocelyn Morlock, one of Canada?s finest current composers.
Also on the program are J.S. Bach?s Suite No. 1 in G major for solo cello, John Rutter?s delightful and masterfully arranged traditional Christmas carols for women?s voices and harp, as well as other Christmas favourites like Joy to the World and Christmas Time is Here (Charlie Brown).
Versatile choral composer Bruce Sled has written the beautiful and evocative to name the moon for Couloir and Laudate.
Veni Emmanuel is the newest creation by the cross-genre composer team Andrei Diaconu and Taymaz Saba, Laudate?s composers-in-residence. Their works wowed the audiences into almost a rock-like fervour at Laudate?s spring Voices, Sax & Syn concert, a CD of which is about to be released. Veni Emmanuel uses the ancient Latin text of O Come, O Come Emmanuel in a fascinating setting for harp, cello, pre-recorded music and voices.
Tickets: $30 adults, $25 seniors, $10 with student card, Free 12 & under. Online at www.laudatesingers.com or call 604-729-6814
